Linux Kicking Microsoft Out Of Indiana Schools

By David Utter

Desktop machines by Elkhart, IN-based Wintergreen Systems running Linspire Linux could end up on 300,000 desks. Three school districts in Indiana will be the focus of a continuing pilot program that has seen Linux enter school systems throughout the state. Many of the classes in the new pilot schools will have individual machines in place as classes start again in August, according to a press release.

"We're thrilled that a desktop Linux solution is being evaluated in Indiana with such success, and we're confident that other school systems will look to this deployment as an example for their own classrooms," said Kevin Carmony, president and CEO of.Linspire, Inc, in a statement.

Education and computing used to be synonymous with Apple. At a time when Apple machines were much more known for being dominant in certain niches, schools and universities had them in their shared labs.

Microsoft began targeting the education market, and being part of a lower cost PC platform helped them supplant Apple in a lot of educational facilities. But schools have always had to make tough budget choices, and it appears another computing option may push Microsoft out of some classrooms.

As long as teachers can effectively deliver lessons and complement their teaching plans, and students can navigate the systems, Linux should continue to find acceptance in the education market.

Novell To Provide JEMS Support

By Chris Crum

Novell has announced that it will be providing technical support for JBoss Enterprise Middleware System (JEMS), including the market-leading JBoss Application Server. This announcement means that Novell is the first Linux infrastructure vendor to offer enterprise-level support for JEMS, and customers will have one contact for support of mission critical applications.

"JEMS has quickly become the middleware standard, and now, with Novell's support across multiple operating platforms, we anticipate JEMS to become even more rapidly adopted in the enterprise," said JBoss vice president of strategy and corporate development, Bob Bickel.

"Our Professional Open Source model is about making open source safe for the enterprise and giving customers choices when it comes to deployment," added Bickel. "JBoss on SUSE Linux from Novell gives customers high performance at a competitive price and true enterprise-level support."

The two companies have held previous in agreements in which Novell became a JBoss Authorized Service Partner, bundled JBoss Application Server as the default app server on Novell's SUSE LINUX Enterprise Server 9, and provided engineering contributions to the development of JBoss Portal.

"JBoss has seen tremendous adoption in the market of its open source middleware platform, and the combination of JEMS on top of SUSE Linux gives customers a powerful, cost effective foundation for running their business applications," said David Patrick, vice president and general manager, Linux, Open Source Platforms and Services for Novell.

"Our expanded agreement reduces cost and risk for customers and gives them peace of mind as they move critical applications in their data centers to an open source platform," added Patrick.

Novell now provides technical support worldwide for the entire JEMS platform, which includes JBoss Application Server, the Hibernate object/relational mapping (ORM) engine, the Apache Tomcat JSP/servlet engine and JBoss Portal.

Novell is now providing, for the first time, worldwide technical support for the entire JEMS platform, and any platform that JEMS products run on.
