Quite a few distros have come out with updates in the last few weeks, so here is a summary of whats going on out there in the world of Linux.
Red Hat - RHEL 5.8 was recently released as a beta for users to test out. Although RHEL 6.2 has already been released, Red Hat will still be supporting the 5.X series until 2017. RHEL is focusing more on stability and reliability, while the 6.X series is more focused on progress. For more information on the various products from Red Hat, visit their website.
Linux Mint - LM 12 "Lisa" was released a few weeks ago with a load of shiny new features. The distro now features the new version of the GNOME desktop, which some people disagree with. They do however have a new set of tools called MGSE (Mint Gnome Shell Extensions) that will supposedly allow users to interact with their desktop in a more traditional manner. As well as these two distributions, CentOS and Oracle have released their copies of Enterprise Linux 6.2 just two weeks after the release of the official Red Hat version. CentOS is basically the same thing as RHEL except slightly stripped down and free. Oracle is a little bit different, as it uses the Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel, which is a custom creation of Oracle. It's written to be extremely sturdy and is optimized for Oracle software and hardware.
Well, that's it for the updates, so make sure that you have all of your systems up to date for whatever distro you happen to be using. Out-of-date
